Another 2011 Festival film, YOUNG GOETHE IN LOVE, opens this Friday at the Harkins Camelview.

Germany 1772 - the young and tumultuous Johann Goethe (Alexander Fehling) aspires to be a poet but after failing his law exams, is sent by his father (Henry Huebchen) to a sleepy provincial court to mend his ways. At first, he tries to do his best and wins the praise and friendship of his superior Kestner (Moritz Bleibtreu). But then Lotte (Miriam Stein) enters his life and nothing is the same as before. However, Johann is unaware that Lotte is in fact already promised by her father (Burghart Klaußner) to Kestner. The dramatic and unfulfilled love between the poet and Lotte was the template for his masterpiece "The Sorrows of Young Werther."

SFF Fave "Mozart's Sister" Opens Friday at the Camelview!

Another 2011 Festival film, MOZART'S SISTER, opens this Friday at the Harkins Camelview. A re-imagined account of the early life of Maria Anna 'Nannerl' Mozart, five years older than Wolfgang and a musical prodigy in her own right.

Beginning in 1763, the film follows the Mozart family's exhausting life on the road, traveling by coach from one royal court to the next, where the nobility marvel at young Wolfgang's prodigious talent. But accomplished singer, harpsichordist, violinist Nannerl, Wolfgang's elder by five years, first held forth as the family's infant prodigy. At the film begins, she is still performing, though overshadowed and sidelined as accompanist by Wolfgang's growing fame. Her father bows to social strictures "for her own good," refusing to let her continue with the violin or compose, while privately conceding Nannerl's talent to his wife. No longer a precocious tot, Nannerl chafes at the limitations imposed by her gender and frets about her prospects.

The Women on the 6th Floor stole the hearts of our audiences and took home our Audience Favorite Award for 2011! Despite very close competition from La Rafle and The Way, The Women led our biggest and best year so far!

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive for our new venue, the Harkins Shea crew did an amazing job, as did our volunteers and supporters!

We would also like to congratulate John Sayles for winning our first ever Artistic Integrity Award at the screening of his new film, Amigo.

It's been a tremendous year and we can hardly believe it's over! But have no fear, preparations for the 2012 Scottsdale International Film Festival have already begun. We look forward to seeing you then!

The Lifelong Effects of a Devastating Earthquake in China are Explored in "Aftershock"

Combining stunning special effects with potent family drama, this heartrending depiction of the impact of the massive 1976 earthquake that killed more than 240,000 in Tangshan, China uses the disaster to set up the story of a family torn apart--and the 40 years it takes them to reconnect. A well-paced film that satisfies on every level, the tale begins as Da Qing buys an electric fan, a rare home comfort at the time, in which his devoted wife, Yuan Ni and their 7-year-old twins luxuriate. When the earthquake hits, a hysterical Yuan Ni learns that both her children have been pinned under a concrete slab; when emergency workers can only save one child, she's left with a "Sophie's Choice"-style decision. The narrative jumps ahead 10 years to 1986, then to 1996, and finally to 2008, allowing director Feng to engage with his wider, more ambitious theme of China's transformation over the past 40 years. Political changes are duly observed, but so are technical advances. By the film’s poignant final 40 minutes, China's economic miracle is in full swing, but it is clear that time and community heal wounds better than gadgets and wealth ever can.

The discreet procedure is initially a great success, with one long-time friend marveling "My God, you are black." But there's a catch: for four hours each night, the young hosts regain control of their bodies and soon come to resent the exploitation of their privileged "clients." Croatian-born filmmaker Damir Lukacevic has made a startlingly original and pointedly provocative futuristic fable of race, responsibility, and personal choice.

Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son (Director Emilio Estevez), killed in the Pyrenees by a storm while walking El Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Driven by his profound sadness and desire to understand his son better, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage, leaving his "California bubble life" behind, armed with his son's backpack and guidebook. Tom navigates the 800 km pilgrimage from the French Pyrenees, to Santiago de Compostela in the northwest of Spain, but soon discovers that he will not be alone on this journey. While walking El Camino, Tom meets other pilgrims from around the world, all broken and looking for greater meaning in their lives: a Dutchman (Yorick van Wageningen), a Canadian (Deborah Kara Unger), and an Irish writer (James Nesbitt). Sharing hardships along "The Way," this unlikely quartet of misfits creates an everlasting bond and Tom begins to learn what it means to be a citizen of the world, as he discovers the difference between "the life we live and the life we choose." THE WAY was filmed entirely in Spain and France along the actual Camino de Santiago.

Contrasting friendship and betrayal, romance and heart-breaking violence, AMIGO is a page torn from the forgotten annals of American imperialism, and a mirror of today’s unresolved conflicts.

A tribute to the director's mother, MAMMA GÓGÓ is a heavily fictionalized, yet boldly honest self-portrait, as well as a sharp satire about the film industry and contemporary Icelandic society. Suffused with a love of movies and packed with allusions to other films, MAMMA GÓGÓ centers on the relationship between the eponymous heroine, an ailing woman, (Kristbjörg Kjeld) and her favorite child, a film director (Hilmir Snaer Gudnason) who has just made his debut feature. This film-within-a-film happens to be a subject similar to that of Fridriksson’s own second film, Children of Nature. At the film’s premiere, the director introduces it, somewhat pompously, as a tribute to the disappearing Iceland of his youth. But when the film flops at the box office, he proceeds to ignore his mother, and his finances and career begin to go off the rails. Meanwhile, his mother’s behavior grows increasingly erratic – a condition her son doggedly tries to ignore. The exquisite hallucination and flashback sequences use scenes from The Girl Gogo, one of the first big domestic hits in Iceland, which also starred Kjeld. Central to the film is the notion that we’re seldom aware of changes that happen right before our eyes – and on the most personal level – preferring instead to chase after phantoms. MAMMA GÓGÓ rivals Fridriksson’s best work and may, in fact, be his masterpiece.

"Life in a Day" Hits Valley Screens for One Screening 7/24 at 7:00pm

After gaining much attention at Sundance, Berlin and SXSW Film Festivals this past January, YouTube’s Life in a Day will premiere Sunday in three Valley theaters for a single showing, one year to the day after it was shot.

The film was directed by Oscar-winning Kevin Macdonald, who took over 80,000 submissions and 4,500 hours of footage from 192 countries and created a feature-length documentary reflecting people’s lives on the 24th of July, 2010.

While over 70,000 hours of uploaded video was user-submitted, the team also sent 400 cameras out to the developing world to capture 20-30% of the final film. “We filmed the people who don’t have Internet or cameras in order to paint a global picture. I didn’t want a global film that’s just about rich people, or Europeans and North Americans,” said Director Kevin MacDonald.

The film juxtaposes certain scenes to prove the disparate differences on Earth, an underlying theme in the film. For example, in one scene where the film is asking “What do you have in your pocket?” One man pulls out a Lamborghini key, while in the next scene, a man in Haiti says, “I have nothing.”

The power of the film rests on the power of the Internet and technology to crowdsource so many riveting and simple moments all over the world. The film is inspirational, emotional, depressing yet uplifting. It is life, in a day.

The film will a single, simultaneous showing in three theatres on Sunday, July 24th at 7pm. The theatres are: Harkins Arrowhead Fountains, Superstition Springs and Tempe Marketplace. CLICK HERE for complete details.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (China)

In 19th-century China, seven year old girls Snow Flower and Lily are matched as laotong - or "old sames" - bound together for eternity. The Drummond Will (UK)

Two city-boy brothers, one a charismatic optimist, the other a whining corporate sell-out, return to the countryside for their father's funeral. On checking out his decrepit estate the boys find one of their dad's ancient friends hiding in a closet with a bag full money. Whilst they decide what to do the pensioner is left to suffocate in the closet, leaving them with a much bigger problem to deal with; tell the police, or leave the body in his own home and pretend nothing happened (keeping the money in the process). This opens their world up to a series of bizarre incidents resulting in the village's quirky population gently decreasing during their short stay.

No-Budget Movie Shot with a Canon 5D Rakes in $200,000 Through iTunes!

Here's a story indie film fans will love! For Lovers Only, a romantic Indie film that has grossed over $200,000 and climbed into iTunes Top 100 Movies, was made with absolutely no money using a DSLR camera!

The film was produced by Mark and Michael Polish using a Canon 5D and computer equipment they already owned. The film stars Mark Polish and Stana Katic, and was shot in just 12 days.

The film makers only expense was hotels, food and taxis, which they claim they would have incurred had they been on vacation instead of shooting a film. In the end, no money was spent on filming or producing the movie.

The movie climbed as high as #43 in iTunes Top 100 Movie chart and has grossed over $200,000 (all profit). There was also no marketing budget, as sales were generated by word of mouth or circulation on social networks.

The Scottsdale Film Festival is looking for bilingual volunteers who are able to drive our Latin American guests between the airport, hotel and theatre. The dates for the four guests are varied but all take place between Friday, Sept 30 and Wednesday, October 5th. A schedule will be created later. Volunteers must possess clean driving records, reliable vehicles, and proof of insurance. If you are interested in helping to get Festival guests around town you will be compensated with free admission commensurate to the amount of time spent volunteering. We also need bilingual volunteers to help with the post-film Q&A between the actors, directors and audience members. The role of theatre staff volunteer is crucial to the success of the event and we cannot do it without the legions of volunteers who show up each season. All staff members are rewarded with one comp ticket for a 4-hour shift and one T-shirt. We do not provide comps for the opening night film/party. You may request multiple shifts, but we may only assign one shift depending upon seniority and staffing levels.

This SIFF fan favorite begins as Jose discovers that Nora, the woman to whom he'd been married to for 30 years and then divorced, has committed suicide. The rabbi explains to Jose that due to the celebration of the Passover festivities, together with a few other factors, if Nora is not buried that same day, they will have to wait almost five days to be able to carry out the burial. It turns out that before she died, Nora devised an elaborate plan in order for him to easily take care of her funeral and wake. But she missed something, a mysterious photograph left under the bed will lead to an unexpected outcome which will remind us that sometimes the greatest love stories are hidden in the smallest places. Don't miss this funny and heart felt film from acclaimed Mexican director Mariana Chenillo.

Marilou Mermans stands out as a recent widow who tries to organize a reunion of the singing group once known as "The Sisters of Love." Jan Van Looveren also shines as her troubled son whose modest musical talents suddenly prove helpful. His rules are simple, make them feel how they want to feel and he will take everything. Gábor is a textbook sociopath until the latest object of his desire, and the chance at his most lucrative con ever, affect him like never before. Hanna (Gabriella Hámori) is a professional ballerina. After a car accident, her injuries make the prospect that she will dance again all but a prayer. Hope comes in the form of a possible contract for an American ballet tour, if she can rehabilitate. BACKYARD, by Carlos Carrera, is a fictional account of the atrocitiesthat continue to occur in Ciudad Juárez. We follow police officer Blanca Bravo (an astonishingperformance by Ana de la Reguera) who is sent to Ciudad Juárez from Mexico City to investigate a series of murders of young women. Most of the victims are low-paid laborers who have been drawn to Ciudad Juárez by the possibility of work at American-owned factories, or maquiladoras, that sprang up on the Mexican side of the border after the NAFTA agreement went into effect. "Quick Gun Murugan" - India - Screening October 2nd & 3rd

Looking for something a little different? Take a break from some of the festival's more serious fare with a western spoof from India that's a whole lotta fun!

QUICK GUN MURUGAN could very well signal the birth of a new hybrid film genre: The Time-Travelling Bollywood Comedy-Western. It draws from a wide range of cinematic sources, including the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone, the stylized action sequences of the Matrix trilogy, and the comic sensibilities of Kung Fu Hustle. With a few Bollywood musical numbers thrown in for good measure, plus a few nods to traditional Indian mythology, the result is one very memorable film going experience. Set in the outrageous and often unpredictable world of Bollywood cinema (but limiting itself to a U.S.-friendly running time) the film follows the title character, vegetarian gunslinger Quick Gun Murugan, through time and space, as he battles the diabolical Rice Plate Reddy. Rice Plate and his mob terrorize the countryside forcing all eating establishments to follow his strict non-vegetarian guidelines, scheming to abolish vegetarianism all together. He intends to spread his non-vegetarian restaurant chain, “McDosa,” all over India, reaping in massive amounts of wealth. To achieve his ultimate master plan, Rice Plate uses all the standard villainous tactics: fear, violence, and bullying. It is up to the flamboyantly dressed sharpshooter, Quick Gun Murugan, to right these wrongs and keep the streets of Mumbai vegetarian-friendly. In his quest, Quick Gun is aided by the lovely Mango Dolly, the sensible yet stern Locket Love, and his chilling catch phrase, “Mind it!” Quick Gun Murugan represents a truly original blend of Eastern and Western cultures, offering an exciting glimpse into the vibrant cinema of contemporary India.

LETTERS TO FATHER JACOB is the warm-hearted and touching story of Leila, a life sentence prisoner who has just been pardoned. Leila is used to taking care only of herself, so she experiences conflicting emotions when she begins work as a personal assistant to Jacob, the blind pastor living in the parsonage. Every day, the mail man brings letters from people, asking for help from pastor Jacob. Answering those letters is Jacob´s life mission; whereas Leila thinks it´s useless. Leila has already decided to leave the parsonage when the letters suddenly stop coming. Jacob´s life is shaken to its foundation. Two completely different lives have become unexpectedly intertwined, and the roles of the helper and the one being helped are turned upside down.

Alexander’s parents decide to emigrate and they leave Bulgaria. After a distressing passage though Yugoslavia and Italy, the family finally settles in Germany. When the political climate changes, they decide to visit their home country once more, but they are involved in a car accident and only Alex survives. His grandfather, Vasil, goes to see the young man, now suffering from memory loss, but when he sees that the pills prescribed for him by the German doctors aren’t working, he opts for his own course of therapy. He takes the self-assured young man home, to a picturesque Bulgarian town, where Alex starts remembering snippets of his childhood. However, grandpa realizes that he has no right to take control of his grandson’s life. The adventures in this peculiar story (based on the autobiographical novel by Iliya Troyanov) are told with ironic hyperbole and its Balkan charm is masterfully conveyed via the actors, guided by stage

You'll love The Chef Of South Polar, a gentle, quirky film set at a Japanese research base in the frozen no-man’s land of Antarctica. Here, a team of eight men share a 12 month tour of duty where the hardest part is waiting for it to be over.

An Antarctic research station is possibly the last place anyone would expect to encounter seriously fine dining, however, this is what’s on the menu in Shuichi Okita’s delicious adaptation of Jun Nishimura’s autobiographical novel. Lobster, foie gras, you name it—nothing is too luxurious for Chef Nishimura to dish up to the eight man crew of the Dome Fuji Station research base in the frozen no-man’s land where not even a virus can survive, let alone a human. As the men carry out the mundane tasks of their communal isolation interrupted by occasional playful forays into the stunning exterior wilderness, they begin to develop bizarre cravings, or dress eccentrically, and start to pine for home. Okita wisely concentrates the action around their much-anticipated meal times, with Nishimura as a kind of surrogate mother to the disparate team members, seeking to constantly divert them from going stir crazy. Taking a low key, elliptical approach to the story, and told from Nishimura’s point of view with flashbacks to his much-missed wife and young daughter, THE CHEF OF SOUTH POLAR is a delightful, quirky blend of daily observation and elegantly simple aesthetics, as well as a mouthwatering addition to the food movie genre. A Bavarian family struggles to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of a favored son’s death but, emotionally numb to the impact it has had, they proceed by keeping up appearances. The mother’s commission of a portrait of her two children, however, acts as a catalyst for delving into the psychic drama beneath their frozen surfaces. Her daughter Lilli, a dancer, (in a subtle and deeply resonant performance by the striking Karoline Herfurth) is haunted by questions raised in the wake of her beloved younger brother’s demise. She careens along impervious to the interventions staged by her parents, until she and the painter, Max, (Josef Bierbichler) strike up a surprisingly rich friendship that speaks eloquently to the deepest ties between art and life. ~ Mill Valley Film Festival

Eyad Zahra, Producer and Director - The Taqwacores
Since 2005, Mr. Zahra has produced Short Films and Television Segments including the acclaimed short film, "Distance from the Sun" (2004), which garnered over twenty (20) film festival invitations worldwide, and won Dubai Media City’s Ibda’a Best Film Award. Working briefly in Dubai, U.A.E., Mr. Zahra produced TV Promotion Segments for the largest television network in the Middle East, Showtime Arabia. Returning to the United States, Eyad continued producing for Showtime Arabia, and worked on Salaam MTV, the Middle-East’s first ever MTV brand show. Alongside his Production work, Mr. Zahra also worked on the 2007 Warner Brothers Release, "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." Mr. Zahra was the Director’s Assistant to Andrew Dominik. In November 2007, Mr. Zahra’s feature screenplay, "Sammy Paradise," was accepted into the 3rd Annual RAWI Screenwriters lab, hosted by the Royal Film Commission of Jordan and the Sundance Institute. Eyad Zahra graduated in 2004 from the Florida State University School of Motion Picture, Television, & the Recording Arts. Eyad Zahra graduated Magna Cum Lade with Honors in the Major accreditation. In school, Mr. Zahra received the following awards: The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Mass Communications Scholarship Award and the Florida State University Humanitarian of the Year Award.
